The Drive to Samar

This day was crazy. The day started with work. While I was working Karen went to a ticket office and bought us tickets to Samar, the province Karen's family lives in. By the time she returned to pick us up it was almost time for us to catch the bus, but that's okay because people our on Filipino time here and buses, trains and planes usually run about 2hrs behind. Regardless, we still rushed out the door only to be met by horrible traffic and uncomfortable heat. We finally got to the bus station around 12pm (the bus was suppose to leave at 11:30pm) and people were still cramming themselves on, so we fit right in. The amount of people trying to fit on to this bus was unbearable. I'm sure once we left the city, people climbed on top to have some leg room. The drive from Manila to Samar is around 20hrs and the thought of being on that crammed bus was too much for Karen and I. So we got off and decided we'd find another way. Surprisingly the bus station gave us 80% of our money back, which surprised me because in general the Philippines has a no refund policy. Luckily we found a large air conditioned van that agreed to drive us to Samar for 8,000pesos (roughly $200 dollars, which wouldn't pay for the gas in the States). This was much better because we could stop as needed and Karen needs to stop constantly :) The pictures I have shared for this day are taken during our drive to Samar. 20 hrs is the most I've ever spent driving without stopping for the night but we did it and arrived in Samar the next day tired and ready for a nap.
